Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in most foods and water, as well as in the soil and the air. Fluoride has been proven to help fight and even reverse the process of tooth decay caused by acids, plaque, and bacteria that regularly hurt tooth enamel.
Your dentist may recommend a fluoride varnish if you are especially vulnerable to tooth decay. The fluoride varnish is a small, safe amount of fluoride concentrated and added to a base of resin. This base is brushed onto the teeth and hardens once it makes contact with the saliva in your mouth.
Fluoride therapy can be very beneficial from the ages of 6 months to 16 years. Adults can also benefit from fluoride therapy. In recent studies, it was found that topical fluoride–from toothpastes, mouth rinses and in-practice treatments–is just as important in the fight against tooth decay as it is in strengthening and developing teeth.
